Abel was initially summer landscapes but devoted himself increasingly to painting of river and city views in moonlight. This 'nocturnes' locks with the romantic admiration of his contemporaries for the mysterious, embodied in the atmosphere of night and moonlight. The moon faces the 17th-century painter Aert van der Neer was taking his example. His father P. G. Os and brother P.F. Os sometimes painted the animals in his landscapes.
